There is a battle going on in our country between those who believe that horses should not be slaughtered for meat and those who believe that they should be slaughtered for their meat.
The folks against are not just "bleeding hearts". They are people from all walks of life. The main argument against the slaughter of horses, in my opinion, is that it is cruel and unnecessary.
The people who argue for slaughter say that it is a way to end the lives of horses who are "unwanted" or "unfit".
If you follow the slaughter trail, as I do, you will find that most people believe that there are ways to end life peacefully by euthanasia and that it is not necessary to ship hundreds of horses young and old, injured or fit, to their deaths to satisfy the dinner tables of Europe.
The primary reason that horse slaughter, like the slaughter of any animal, is still going on is money. If it were not profitable to send animals to slaughter then we would not be having this discussion.
The largest contributors providing horses for slaughter are the breeders who over breed stock year after year.
The racing industry, the various breeders of purebreds and those people who naively believe that they can send an old horse or an unwanted horse to auction without dire consequences for that horse are the ones who are perpetuating this horror.
The pro-slaughter people view horses as livestock. Those against slaughter view horses as living, breathing partners in our existence who deserve a better fate than a ride to hell in a slaughter truck and a terrifying death at the end of their lives.
The hundreds of thoroughbreds that run for their lives literally, the hundreds of quarter horses that are bred and sold and disposed of like kleenex are the victims in this story. We race and ride, groom and show, drive and plow, and then.....when we no longer want or need that particular animal, off to the auction they go. It is so easy when you do not have to get your hands dirty or actually be there when the bolt goes into the brain or have to be there on that filthy dangerous truck on the ride to hell.
Just send them to auction, wash your hands of them and pocket the blood money and go on to the next fresh horse to ride and race and drive and use up.
I believe that our society is coming into a new age where there will be enlightenment and mercy towards animals. The slaughter industry is one where we can put that mercy and compassion to work. There are many other causes within this cause and many other animals that deserve our mercy and compassion.
I am only addressing this subject today. I hope that you will read this and take it to heart. I hope that cruelty and suffering of animals can be stopped in our lifetime.
Thank you for your interest and time.
